Taking to TikTok, this netizen shared her husband’s first experience trying horseshoe crab at MAHA 2024.

For those who do not know what a horseshoe crab is or what it tastes like, this animal is considered a living fossil. It has pretty intimidating looks and knobbly bits in its interior, giving off a crab-like taste.

In the video, the dish was paired with accompanying condiments.

“This was the first time my husband tried eating horseshoe crab.”

“It began from this to a trip to the hospital because his eyes became swollen the next day,” she wrote.

In the comments section, netizens shared the same experience.

“My sister had a different allergic reaction to horseshoe crab, that she was sent to the ICU after experiencing shortness of breath.”

“My lips went puffy after eating horseshoe crab,” said a user.

One ‘expert’ shared that the crab must be cleaned and its poisonous innards discarded for it to be safely consumed.

“In the video, it seems as though the shopowner did not clean the crab thoroughly. He was lucky that all he experienced was puffy eyes.”

“In other cases, the consumer may experience nausea and more. I would question why the shop is allowed to sell this delicacy but do not have the experience of handling one with care,” they explained.
