It seems that the donation boxes at mosques are often a prime target for thieves looking for some quick cash. However, two suspects were recently arrested after getting caught stealing money from the donation box of a mosque in Alor Setar.

What made things worse was that the pair had only managed to retrieve less than RM10 and that their act was caught on the CCTV of the mosque, which has since gone viral on social media.

According to Utusan, Masjid A’ala committee member Mat Khair Ishak said the gates and doors on all entrances to the mosque are never locked to make it easier for people to come and go.

“People are free to enter to pray or use facilities such as toilets because the mosque’s location is on the side of the main Alor Setar-Sungai Petani road,” he said when contacted.

Mat Khair said that due to the frequency of theft of the funds from the boxes, the management collects all the money in the boxes daily to keep it safe. He said he became aware of the latest incident after finding that one of the boxes had been moved from its original position.

“Usually the box is placed at the main entrance inside the mosque, but when I got to the mosque, I found it was in the women’s prayer section which caused suspicion.”

“We then looked at the CCTV and found that it was the act of a man and a woman who entered the mosque to steal the money,” he said.

In the video, a couple came to the mosque with a motorcycle before the female suspect changed clothes and entered the women’s prayer section while the male suspect moved the box from the outside into the female section.

“The female suspect was spotted using a small metal cutter to open the box. However, they failed to get the money because we had taken the money out earlier to keep,” he said, adding that he does not plan to make a police report related to the incident.
