For patients in an ambulance, a minute can mean everything. Which is why there are laws and regulations that give ambulances the right of way while on the road.

But, in Malaysia, that is only the case unless there is a VIP convoy on the road.

A video shared to the Inforoadblock Facebook page, showcases dashcam footage from a private ambulance on Jalan Tun Razak, Johor Bahru.

Ambulance 1

They wrote, “Dashcam footage from a private ambulance has gone viral after it was asked to stop to give way to a VVVIP convoy.”

In the video, all the cars that were stopped by the traffic police dedicated to the convoy could be seen moving to the side to allow the ambulance through to the front of the line. The traffic police could then be seen stopping the ambulance while looking out for the convoy coming from the flyover.

Ambulance 2

After a while, the traffic police allowed the ambulance to proceed with their journey.

This has since caused backlash among netizens who are calling out VIPs for treating people’s lives like they are lesser than their own.

Ambulance 5

“VVIP lives are more valuable than the lives of the people.”

Ambulance 6

“If Malaysian ministers don’t value the lives of the people then just don’t be ministers.”

Others pointed out that there would have been nothing wrong with allowing the ambulance to pass.

Ambulance 3

“Just give a lane to the ambulance to pass.”

Ambulance 4

Ambulances are emergency vehicles that are rushing patients to medical facilities for immediate treatment, it is truly unfair to make these ambulance drivers and their patients wait just because a VIP does not want to endure traffic.

It is about time the Malaysian authorities rethink the entire ‘VIP convoy’ thing and have proper guidelines for traffic police officers to allow emergency vehicles to pass.

This isn’t the first time an ambulance has been stopped to give way to a VIP convoy but we hope it’s the last.
