Remember the 65-year-old aunty who went viral after Uncle Kentang decided to help her? Many Malaysians refused to believe that the aunty actually needed help, and they came to that conclusion with only one glance at the picture.

Apparently, Uncle Kentang has been keeping a secret about the viral aunty but following major criticisms online, he decided to spill the tea last night (February 20) via a Facebook post.

“She’s not doing well, mentally”

Uncle Kentang revealed the aunty has been jobless for 10 years and all these while, her brother and brother-in-law have been taking care of her, financially and physically due to her mental illness. However, the situation has proven to be tough after her brother was admitted into the old folks’ home. Her brother-in-law, on the other hand, is ageing and it’s nearly impossible for him to take care of her too.

Knowing that he was hitting a dead end, he reached out to Uncle Kentang to seek help.

“He asked me to make an arrangment to send her into the old folks’ home,” Uncle Kentang explained.

He then continued to describe how tough life has been for the unfortunate aunty, and said, “Her bra strap kept falling off, which shows that she couldn’t even get herself a new bra.”

Not only that but Uncle Kentang added that her shirt looks untidy as if it has been worn for many many years, as well as her spectacle rims that were simply glued on, and not a new one.

“She doesn’t have a proper phone. No iPhone, just an old, secondhand Samsung.”

“Can’t she just have a cup of coffee, despite her condition?”

Uncle Kentang admitted that his intention was merely to treat her to a cup of coffee during the rainy day, and questioned the public if a mentally ill person can’t have a drink in peace.

He said that he couldn’t reveal her condition to the public but for the sake of putting an end to all the misunderstanding, he had no choice but to share the truth.

“I had to explain why I’m helping her. Sometimes, some truths are not meant to be shared but in this case, I had no choice because the misunderstanding is unfair to her.”

Now that Uncle Kentang had made the tough decision to reveal the truth, what do you think of it? Despite not mentioning the kind of mental illness specifically, we should make the world a safe haven for those who suffer in silence, as much as we can.
