Amid the Wuhan novel coronavirus outbreak, now formally known as Covid-19, by far the ones who have to make the most sacrifices are the medical staff who are working night and day at the epicentre of the infection itself: Wuhan. Whether it be doctors or nurses, stories have been told of how these brave souls are willing to go the extra mile just to ensure the health and well-being of their patients.

Such is this tragic story about a nurse who is working in one of Wuhan’s hospitals, the famed ‘Fire God Mountain’ Hospital, that was constructed in under 8 days to treat Covid-19 patients, as China Press reports.

Given the fact that medical staff who are assigned to these Covid-19 hospitals have no choice but to stay in these hospitals themselves to prevent possible infection beyond hospital perimeters, a nurse working at the ‘Fire God Mountain’ Hospital was forced to stay and keep to her duties, despite the heartbreaking news she received.

In a harrowing phone call that none of us would ever want to experience, the nurse finds out that her mother had just passed away.

But as she is working in a quarantine hospital, she will not be able to attend the funeral to send her mother off on her final journey.

Crying and clearly in a state of grief, she breaks down and makes the obligatory bows to her recently deceased mother over video call. Still visibly crying, her colleagues try to comfort her. However, tears in her eyes, she decides to go right back to the front-lines of her duty to work.

It is in moments like this that we should always be reminded to treat medical staff with integrity and respect for the work that they do, instead of shunning them during times of crisis for the sake of paranoia. We extend our deepest condolences to the nurse, and hope that her mother will be able to rest in peace.
