According to a report by The News Straits Times, police are investigating five people for allegedly beating up a worker in an eatery at Publika. The incident was recorded on the restaurant’s CCTV and footage of the video has been circulating on the internet, which has drawn public outrage.

The incident took place on Sunday morning (June 10) where a group of five people ate a heavy breakfast that supposedly cost RM77.90 in a restaurant in Publika. In the message that accompanies the viral video, it warns other eateries about this group of people. Looks like the customer isn’t always right, then!

The message alleges that “they looked like they didn’t want to pay the bill so they started to find ways to avoid paying. After that, they started to complain about the quality of food. When the staff insisted that they needed to pay pay, they got beaten up terribly.”

The restaurant owner, Ekbal Hussain Mohamed Gani said the scuffle took place at about 11am while he was away. “I got a call from my workers about the incident and rushed to the shop but the group had already left,” he said. The assault started after the group complained about the service of the staff and then threw a plate of gravy on the floor.

“I was told that the group was unruly from the time they arrived but the actual problem started when they were asked to pay for the food they ate. That was when they began hurling vulgarities at my workers, threatening them and even hitting one of them,” he added.

Ekbal said that one of his workers, a foreigner, was hit repeatedly on his head and face, by two of the men. “My worker had to seek treatment after which we lodged a police report over the incident,” he said. In the video, you can see the unruly customers discussing with some of the workers and then suddenly, one of them hits the worker next to him.

Two of them starts arguing with the worker while he looks like he is trying to appease them. They make threatening gestures to other staff off-camera who look like they wanted to help their fellow colleague. Suddenly, they shove the poor worker and then repeatedly hit him while he begs them to stop.

Fortunately, Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner R Munusamy said police have managed to arrest two of the suspects on the same day. “That night at about 11.30pm we arrested two of the suspects in Kepong, where else the third suspect was picked up the next day evening, to facilitate the investigation,” he said.
