A viral dashcam footage recently caused an uproar among Malaysian social media users who urged DBKL to take immediate action against anyone who illegally “chups” parking spots.

In the video shared on the X page of @update11111, the driver was waiting for another driver in the grey car to leave as he was waiting for that parking spot. If you look closely, an uncle behind the car was already waiting to occupy the parking spot – with a chair.

The driver turned on his signal to imply that he wanted the parking spot but the uncle immediately put a chair there after the car left. Regardless, the driver ignored the uncle and drove into the parking spot, prompting the uncle to move the chair away.

Based on the information shared, the incident happened outside a Bah Kut Teh restaurant in Taman OUG, KL.

Is it illegal to occupy a parking spot with a chair?

According to the official information from JPJ, occupying a parking spot with a chair, cone or any items is an offence under Section 50(3) Road Transportation Act 1987, and it’s not just about getting a fine of RM2,000.

You will also face a 6 months jail term.

Social media users, on the other hand, are wondering if the relevant authorities will ever take action to curb this issue and some of them are urging DBKL to take action.

“Do they have the guts to take action?”

“I think they have ‘settled’ it under the table.”

“DBKL aims for flat areas where they will issue a summon twice. In this area where people run their businesses, DBKL often turns a blind eye.”

“DBKL and JPJ, are you guys sleeping on your job?”

“I’ve seen a lot of people doing this. DBKL, are you guys not awake?”

Here’s what you can do if you encounter the same situation.

It’s really simple and all you need is your WhatsApp!

Take photos of the illegally occupied parking spots, provide relevant information (such as location and time), and send your complaints via WhatsApp to this number, +6013-449 8997, which is the hotline for JPJ. For more information, you can visit JPJ and DBKL’s official website.

Feel free to share with us the hotspots for illegally occupied parking spots.
