Previously, an issue surrounding the meagre meals reportedly provided to on-call doctors sparked outrage among netizens, with many calling on the Ministry of Health (MOH) to look into the matter.
The viral post claimed that doctors were allegedly given only a few slices of bread and some jam for breakfast after working overtime. The photo was later compared to another meal served to doctors working overseas, which included a cup of hot drink, a glass of water, and a pastry.
Viral bread and jam meal clarified as afternoon tea
The Penang State Health Department (JKNPP) and Bukit Mertajam Hospital (HBM) have since issued a statement addressing the issue, clarifying that the meal shown in the viral photo was afternoon tea and not a main meal.
Penang State Health Director Dr Zulhizam bin Haji Abdullah explained that the bread and jam shown in the photo were part of the four meals provided to on-call medical officers throughout the day, which include breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.
“JKNPP and HBM acknowledge and appreciate the public’s concern and feedback regarding the meals provided to medical officers who are on call.
“For clarification, the meal shown in the viral photo was an afternoon tea serving and not a main meal. It was one of four meals provided throughout the day, namely breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, based on the menu planned by the Dietetics and Catering Department of Bukit Mertajam Hospital.”
“We will continue to look into areas for improvement”
Zulhizam also explained that the menu is planned and prepared by Dietitians and Food Preparation Assistant Officers in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s Hospital Diet, Dietetics and Catering Services Manual.
Under the guidelines, on-call medical officers are provided with four meals throughout the day with a total estimated daily energy intake of between 1,500 and 1,800 kcal.
“The department understands that the photo may have created different perceptions when viewed without the full context of the meal arrangements. As such, JKNPP and HBM appreciate all feedback received and will continue to look into areas for improvement to ensure that meals are properly provided and that the welfare of on-call officers remains a priority, in line with the relevant circulars currently in force.”
