It has been a week since the devastating landslide in Batang Kali took place, and at the time of writing, one victim has yet to be found, and the only victim left is only 11 years old.
Of all the people who have been working hard to find and rescue the victims, the rescue team deserves the utmost recognition and respect.
Social activist, Kuan Chee Heng, fondly known as Uncle Kentang left a heartfelt message in his Facebook post this morning (December 23) to thank the fellow rescue teams for their endless hard work.
“They’re ‘cowards’ who deserve a lot of respect”
In his post, Uncle Kentang calls the rescue team a bunch of “cowards”, but before it angers you, we assure you that it’s really not the context that you’re thinking of.
Uncle Kentang said that the Ministry of Health has placed some of its medical officers to conduct checking on blood pressure for all members of the rescue teams. This is to ensure that the latter is fit to carry on with their rescue jobs.
However, some of them are fearful of the result as they are worried that they might see an increase in their blood pressure, which will deem them unfit to continue looking for the remaining victim.
“They don’t sleep well and rest well, do you really think their blood pressure is not going up?”
However, the social activist said that their spiritual will is higher and stronger than their blood pressure. The result of the blood pressure test may cease the rescue operations, that’s why many of them opted to avoid the test so that their work can go on.
“They’re willing to be called cowards, because they understand the feelings of the family of the victims. They’re doing everything they can, and they vow to not rest until the remaining victim is found.”
Uncle Kentang ended his post by urging everyone to pay a tribute to the rescue team.
“These ‘cowards’ who are afraid of the blood pressure test are the real unsung heroes!”
As for Uncle Kentang himself, he has also contributed by bringing food and beverages to the rescue team.
Not all heroes wear capes, and the members of the rescue team truly deserve more for their hard work and efforts. Let’s hope that the one final victim can be found soon. Our thoughts and prayers go to the family of the deceased victims.
