Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is a man pressed for time.
According to Malaysiakini, the 93-year-old premier said that he does not have long left to live.
“I am lucky I survived this long. Actually, I should not be around to watch what happened with my predecessors.”
“But I am lucky in the sense that I am not only older but still able to function.”
Realising that age and time were not on his side, Tun Mahathir said, “I realise that I am very old, and very soon I will weaken, and I will die.”
“So I am always in a hurry.”
Speaking at an interview with Focus Malaysia, he cited that he is in a hurry to complete the things that he wants to do in Malaysia.
He also stated that as an interim Prime Minister, he is prepared to leave when the time is right, and promises to give it his all during his tenure.
“If I am asked to leave, I’ll leave.”
“No specific date was given. I was only told that I am the choice for Prime Minister-ship from the opposition coalition, but they did not specify when.”
“They have said that I am the interim and that somebody will take over.”
Tun Mahathir envisioned that his tenure as Prime Minister would end long before the next General Election.
Currently the oldest head of government in the world, Tun Mahathir denied claims of a cabinet reshuffle despite highlighting the shortcomings of his ministers.
“If I go around discharging and replacing them, it is not going to help.”
“I have to try and, well, work with them to acquire experience, and believe me, some of them have done quite well.”
We pray that the new Malaysia will continue to flourish under the tenure of Tun Mahathir.
Let’s hope that the dream of a new Malaysia will not end when the time comes for Tun Mahathir to depart as Malaysia’s Prime Minister.
