The issue of the Lesbian Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights has always caused heated debates in our country. In fact, just last week, the government came under fire by various authorities after the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa had ordered to remove the portraits of two LGBT activists from an exhibition under the George Town Festival (GTF) 2018.

Earlier today (Aug 13), Perlis Mufti Datuk Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin posted a statement on Facebook addressing the question about which toilets transgender people should use.

In his post, as quoted in Malay Mail, he stated that the confusion of gender has led to the confusion of using the toilet. He suggested individuals to check their biological sex to determine which toilet to use, saying,

“I would like to suggest that if any individual is confused, it is recommended he meets an expert to examine him while he urinates to determine the origin of the urine.”

“If it exits from a male organ, then use the men’s toilet. If it exits from female genitals, then please use the women’s toilet.”

“If nothing comes out at all or if it does not come out from either male or female genitals, then please go to the hospital. If the doctors say you are disabled, then you can use the disabled toilet.”

Besides that, he urged those who are unable to afford specialist consultations to check their genitals themselves.

Asri’s post has since garnered much attention from netizens, with many showing support for his statement.

“Do not cater toilets for the transgender people…this would mean that we are acknowledging the LGBT (community).”

“If you can’t afford to consult a specialist, it’s best that you jump into the river/sea to end your life. You’re giving trouble to the entire nation to determine which toilet you should use.”

“The problem is they (transgender people) are all hypocrites. If you’re a male, just use the male toilet….”
