The Chinese National Type Schools (SJKC) were specifically designed for the Chinese Malaysian children to learn their mother tongue as well as their culture. But now, it’s clear that this type of school is becoming a favourite choice among Malay and Indian parents.

We can see this phenomenon happening in Alor Gajah, Melaka, where SJKC Sin Min is located. The school is the main choice for the parents there, no matter their race. Over the past few years, the school has been receiving more Malay students as compared to their Chinese counterpart.

As mentioned in FMT, the school now has a total of 55 students and only 9 of them are Chinese. For the 2019 school session, the school will have 44 Malay students and 2 Indian students. For Standard One, there will only be one Chinese student compared to 12 Malay students.

The Headmaster of the school, Goh Seng Hua explained that the decrease of Chinese students in the school started 10 years ago when the Chinese community in the area slowly migrated to the nearby Masjid Tanah as well as the city.

He said,

“There are 11 teachers including me teaching in classes where the majority of the students are Malays and what’s more interesting is that there will be no Chinese students at all in Standard Five next year.”

Parents of the students in the school have stated that it is a great opportunity for their children to study in Chinese National Type School (SJKC) as their children can master the Mandarin language which is vital for their future.

What do you think of this unique school? Isn’t it cool when other races become the majority at a vernacular school? Share with us your thoughts in the comment section below.
