A hallmark trait of a good reporter is their ability to remain professional when faced with sudden changes and tough situations.
Astro AWANI reporter Fareez Azman, displayed behaviour exemplary of an excellent reporter when he became a hero to a little boy chased by a monkey at Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan while doing a live broadcast.
According to Astro AWANI, Fareez, assisted by cameraman Khairulazman Mohamad was reporting live on GE15 for the AWANI Bulletin at 4pm on October 25, 2022 (Tuesday) when the incident happened.
He was speaking into the camera when the little boy being chased by a monkey suddenly dashed towards him and latched onto his leg.
“At that time, I had only been reporting for a few minutes. I did hear the screams and squeals of children, but I thought they were just playing on the beach. Not long after, the child’s voice got closer, and I caught a glimpse of the boy running“, said Fareez.
The next thing he knew, the boy was hugging his leg.
Although the incident took place during a live broadcast, Fareez remained calm and handled the situation with grace while helping the little boy.
“I tried to calm down the kid, even though the information I wanted to share was put on hold.”
“When the kid had calmed down, I continued with the broadcast. I was worried for his safety as the monkey was quite fierce when I tried shooing it away.”
A video of the incident was uploaded on Fareez’s TikTok account and went viral with more than 1.4 million views.
Consequently, Fareez has continued to report on the issue of monkeys being a menace to visitors of Teluk Cempedak so that the safety of the tourist destination can be improved.
