For most Malaysians, MR.DIY is considered our number one wholesome and affordable home improvement retailer. But for a special 6-year-old boy named Aslam, his local MR.DIY is more than just a store; it’s his very own safe haven and second home!

We found out as much after a recent video surfaced of him kissing and hugging a MR.DIY banner at their Sunway Giza branch, which he visits on-the-daily with his mother. Intrigued by this unique fondness for the home improvement brand, we here at WOB spoke to MR.DIY, who also noticed their little admirer’s unorthodox-but-still-adorable attachment to their retail brand!

MR.DIY first found out about Mohammad Aslam’s endearment with their decorations through an email from his grandmother, Mahani Hussein. According to Mahani, her grandson would ask his parents to take him to a mall with a MR.DIY store every day to browse the store. He would also mingle and marvel at the bright colours of the wall posters, trolleys and decorations, such as the aforementioned banner!

“Mahani told us that Aslam is a very bright and happy child, but unlike most children his age, he doesn’t play with toys or games. He instead finds happiness in visiting MR.DIY every day, and ‘befriending’ the mascots and cartoon characters in MR.DIY’s decor visuals. Sometimes, when his mother accompanies him and buys him lunch, he would even eat his food while looking at the murals!”

Seeing his extraordinary love for MR.DIY, Mahani emailed MR.DIY to ask if she could receive banners, stickers or posters to give to Aslam for his 6th birthday, which fell on 23 November. But what they did instead was way more heartwarming than what they could ask for, and we’re already getting the feels!

For this special 6-year-old boy’s birthday, MR.DIY went above and beyond by throwing a surprise party for Aslam at his home!

To show their appreciation towards their number one customer, MR.DIY decided to organise an unforgettable surprise for Aslam: by setting up a MR.DIY-themed birthday party at his home! The surprise took place on his birthday itself when Aslam was out for his usual MR.DIY visit with his mother, Hazlin.

While they were preoccupied playing games with their mascot, Mr. Panda, MR.DIY sent a team to set up their birthday surprise for him in his playroom with the help of his family members. It was then they brought in numerous goodies such as large MR.DIY banners, toys, hampers, cushion pillows, a T-shirt and even a customised birthday poster! But of course, who could forget the most important part of any birthday: a MR.DIY chocolate cake just for Aslam!

Upon coming home, Aslam was at a loss for words after seeing his house adorned with the bright yellow and white colours that MR.DIY is known for! He stood in awe of the many MR.DIY decorations in his living space that he could only hope to see at their retail store previously.

And of course, everyone else – including the awesome MR.DIY staff members – joined in by singing a birthday song for Aslam; we literally kenot when we saw how they helped him blow out his birthday cake candles! ?

But what really tugged at our heartstrings, was hearing how Aslam couldn’t stop playing with his gifts long after the party ended! According to Hazlin, “He spent a long time in his room playing with his presents. His favourite gift is definitely the T-shirt; he couldn’t stop admiring and holding on to it all night after the party ended!

“If it were up to Aslam, he would wear the yellow MR.DIY shirt all the time! Other than the shirt, he would also roll around on the floor playing with the placard that has his name on it. I even caught him kissing one of the MR.DIY banners like in the video too!”

Clearly, the birthday surprise was a major success, as Mahani said, “If he could, he would probably want to set up his own MR.DIY in his house. We cannot express how much we appreciate MR.DIY for setting up this special surprise for him. Thank you, MR.DIY!” ??

From their interaction with Adik Aslam as their number one fan, we can see that MR.DIY is not just a home retailer business; they are also a brand that cares for and appreciates Malaysians the same way Aslam does for them!

Regardless if you’re looking for appliances to help liven up your home, tools that assist in making your daily life easier or just want a safe place and second home like Aslam does, then MR.DIY is your one-stop centre for all of these things and more!
