We all need a little break from our busy schedules in order to rest, rejuvenate and recharge. For most of us, however, getting a long leave approved is next to impossible hence we have to depend on the weekends and public holidays to unwind.

This charming little Waterhouse with colourful blue and white decorations is at the heart of a traditional Chinese fishing village in Pulau Ketam, Selangor.

What to expect:

  • Be captivated by the surrounding mangrove swamps and its unique wildlife creatures.
  • Spectacular picturesque view of the Strait of Malacca right from your doorsteps!
  • Escape the stressful city life as there is no traffic on the island with bicycles being the main form of transportation.
  • Mouthwatering fresh seafood is also available all around the village including special prawn balls, crispy fried squids and their famous ikan bakar!
  • The wonderful host and villagers are super friendly and will be more than happy to show you the ins and outs of their wonderful hometown.

Location: 850L1, Bagan Sungai Lima, 42940 Pulau Ketam, Selangor, Malaysia.

Getting there: Park your car at the Pulau Ketam Ferry Terminal in Port Klang and take a ferry directly to Sungai Lima. En route, expect a leisurely drive southward through Federal Highway.  The roads past the highway can be quite bumpy though, so make sure that you’re driving a car equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist for the most seamless staycation experience!

Price: RM150 per room (private double room) per night. There is also a 6-bed mixed dormitory available for only RM79 per person per night during weekends!

Bamboo Village is an environmentally friendly guest house located in the scenic jungles of Hulu Langat, Selangor. Enjoy a surreal experience living in the calm and unique “bamboo style” landscape found nowhere else in Malaysia!

What to expect:

  • The bamboos used to build the complex are imported from Indonesia and have been treated against insect and fungal attacks.
  • Bamboo Village was built with the concept of “Rumah Bambu Taman Sunda” and its Sundanese (an Indonesian ethnic group native to Java Island) influence can be seen throughout the vicinity.
  • All rooms are decorated to make guests feel right at home with personal touches visible all across the complex.
  • The structures are naturally cool without the need for air-conditioning as the bamboos used are rare breeds that have the ability to absorb heat!
  • One unique thing about Bamboo Village is that it offers visitors to stay there for free in a volunteer programme if they stay and work for around 3-5 hours per day for 7 days!

Getting there: Just under 1 hour from Kuala Lumpur depending on the traffic, the route starts to get pretty scenic once you went past Cheras but you may encounter some pretty challenging corners. This shouldn’t be a worry if you drive the Honda Jazz for example, as its excellent handling makes for easy navigation and its 5-star safety rating would make you feel assured the whole ride!

Price: Prices start from as low as RM30 per day with a 3 person cottage terrace only RM120 per night!
