Education is important for the children, but their safety is of the utmost importance.

Yesterday (11 January), Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin had ordered the Majlis Perbandaran Sandakan (MPS) to instantly fix the dilapidated suspension bridge at Kampung Nelayan Tengah. The order was made following the pictures of students risking their lives to cross the bridge going viral online.

Bung Moktar, who is also the state Public Works Minister, said that the fixing works have to be done instantly for the sake of the safety of the students who often use the bridge.

“The infrastructure facility is important and shouldn’t be left just like that. I’ve instructed the MPS to take actions and the government takes this matter seriously, especially when it involves the safety of the students,” he added.

Although the suspension bridge was not an infrastructure facility under the works ministry, the Kinabatangan MP said the safety of the children should be prioritised.

In the pictures that are circulating on news portals and social media, the students, who are said to be studying in Sekolah Kebangsaan Sibuga Besar, are seen dangerously crossing the bridge by holding to the side of the bridge as the floor structure is mostly damaged.

We certainly hope that these children can commute to school safely!
