Do you believe the saying, one is actually no more than a few feet away from a rat, especially in big cities and countries? Being Malaysians, a rat passing by is a normal sight especially around eateries and industrial areas. We have somehow accepted our fate, coexisting with these rodents. See rats, feel like nothing also!
But this has to stop, because rats can potentially be the carrier deadly viruses and can cause lethal outbreaks.
Improper waste management and uncivilised citizens lead to rat infestation
Since food is abundant in this country, most of our food waste are not disposed properly. Be it at home or in restaurants, improper waste management can lead to a severe rat infestation.
A worrying reality has been uncovered recently when a joint operation between local NGOs and MPSJ managed to pick up a whopping 175 rats carcasses within the Taipan USJ area. The almost-cat-sized rats population is said to be growing fast in relation to the poor food waste management system.
Upon inspection, it was found that most eateries simply dump their waste along the roads and back alleys without considering the consequences of their action.
Local authorities ordered to investigate on the issue
In a statement posted on her Facebook page, state assemblywoman of Subang Jaya, Michelle Ng, who was involved in the operation said that she has asked the local authorities to investigate and find out which shop is responsible for the rubbish in the back lanes. She also has contacted the owners of the shops who clearly had waste in the drains surrounding their shops and asked them to take immediate action.
Local residents have voiced out their concerns regarding the discovery, suggesting the local authorities to be more active in their enforcement and take stern action towards those responsible.
Malaysia, we need to realise that change starts with us. So let’s start managing our waste properly, report offences done by anyone and work together to clean up our surrounding. If we can achieve this, we will no longer be bugged by our long time brodents.
