An abandoned baby in Thailand was tragically denied a proper final resting place and became part of the food chain when a hungry monitor lizard discovered the body.

Villagers in Samutprakarn Province, central Thailand, initially thought the lizard was gnawing on a fish. Upon closer inspection, they were horrified to realise that the creature was feeding on what appeared to be a human baby—something straight out of a horror film.

“I felt sick to my stomach because the baby was torn to pieces,” said one of the first witnesses at the scene.

The villagers rushed to get help to scare the lizard away. Unfortunately, by the time more people arrived, the reptile had dragged the baby away and thrown it onto the grass. Despite their efforts, the lizard refused to leave and continued circling the remains.

When police and rescuers arrived, only the baby’s head and torso remained. The lower body was missing, and the lizard managed to escape through a fence.

Authorities searching for the baby’s mother

According to local police, the incident occurred behind a house primarily occupied by migrant workers. Authorities believe the mother may have abandoned the newborn shortly after birth, possibly due to being unable to care for the child.

The baby’s remains, which showed no signs of decomposition, were sent to the Forensic Department at Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute. It remains unclear whether the baby was already deceased when the lizard began feeding on it.

Local authorities are currently searching for the baby’s mother. If found and proven to have abandoned the child, she will face legal action, according to Bangkok Post.
