It’s no secret that performers, especially famous and international ones, have appearances to keep up with, which is why those who don’t opt for plastic surgery would resort to using Photoshop.
One Taiwanese singer, 53-year-old Annie Yi, has been receiving backlash after festival-goers noticed certain differences when they saw her in person as compared to the pictures she posts online.
According to Today Online, Annie had recently performed at an outdoor music festival where she wore a pink and black outfit. While Annie posted pictures of the festival from her own work studio, netizens couldn’t help but compare them to their own unedited photos, taken at the festival.
Many called her out for editing her images as people noticed that her upper arms did not look like what they were portrayed to be online. They pointed out her ‘droopy armpits’ and called them an ‘eyesore’.
“Aunty Yi, why don’t you wear your clothes properly before coming out on stage next time, so you wouldn’t need to resort to editing your photos to deceive others,” one netizen wrote.
But, could you really blame Annie? After all, her so-called ‘droopy armpits’ are something that is normal and many people have them. Yet, she was shamed.
Just as the beauty industry and social media have normalised unrealistic body standards for the masses, these celebrities probably feel just as pressured, or even more so since they are in the public eye, to look unrealistically perfect.
And it is everyone’s job to tear down these standards and normalise real human bodies, including our absurd need to see celebrities looking absolutely flawless.
Celebrities are humans too and humans aren’t flawless.
