Most of us can’t function before we have our first cup of coffee for the day and if you are one of these people then we’ve got good news for you! A new study has shown that drinking coffee actually benefits your health, instead of causing it harm.
A research led by Robin Poole from the University of Southampton in the UK and other scientists shows that there was a lower risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer for people who drank coffee.
Time said that coffee drinkers were 17% less likely to die early during the study period from any cause, while 19% were less likely to die of heart disease and 18% less likely to develop cancer, compared to people who did not drink coffee. Yay, coffee!
That’s not all, apparently coffee drinkers could also reap other health benefits such as lower rates of type 2 diabetes, neurological conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, metabolic syndrome, gallstones, renal stones and gout. However, liver diseases were discovered to have the greatest benefits compared to other conditions.
Before you go guzzling down that cup of joe, take note that the recommended coffee intake is about three to four cups a day. And that one cup means 8 ounces or about 236ml! You should also keep it as healthy as possible and not load it down with calorie-filled sugars, creams and flavourings. Filtered coffee is the preferred type that you should drink.
There’s also too much of a good thing, as the study shows that drinking too much coffee can result in negative effects so stick to the recommended amount. There were some negative effects in Poole’s study, which unfortunately affects women more than men as it could increase the risk of bone fractures.
The study also cautions pregnant women from drinking it as it can harm the baby. Poole says that although the findings look optimistic for coffee drinkers, it doesn’t mean that people should immediately start drinking coffee or increase their intake.
Instead, he says the good news is that coffee drinkers is more likely to reap benefits from a cup of java instead of harming their health.
So, drink in peace, if you are already downing that steaming cup of coffee!
