It’s Day 23 of the Movement Control Order and understandably, most people are eager for it to be over. However, that’s not the case as the MCO can only end if the outbreak gets under control. There have been multiple rumours swirling around that the MCO might be extended but we should all be patient until an announcement is made tomorrow.
For those who are wondering when will the MCO will be over, a study has shown that lockdowns enforced around the world to curb the spread of Covid-19 can only end when a vaccine against the disease is found.
According to The Star, the study was published in the medical research journal The Lancet and it stated that while China’s lockdown was effective and brought the first wave of Covid-19 to an end, the danger of a second wave was very real indeed.
“While these control measures appear to have reduced the number of infections to very low levels, without herd immunity against Covid-19, cases could easily resurge as businesses, factory operations, and schools gradually resume and increase social mixing.”
The study said if China’s lockdown ended too soon, the number of cases would have risen drastically. Prof Joseph T Wu from the University of Hong Kong, who co-led the research said that strategies such as social distancing and restricted movement were the best strategy until vaccines become readily available.
Unfortunately, there’s no confirmed news of a readily available vaccine. But we shouldn’t lose hope because as we’re speaking, trial and researches for the Covid-19 vaccine are being developed. Other teams are also concurrently undergoing research and testing for their own vaccines, with one made by Inovio Pharmaceuticals, is expected to begin its own safety study this month in the U.S., China and South Korea.
With or without the vaccine, all we can do now is have hope in our Health Ministry and follow their instructions. I’m sure you know what we all must do now, yes, just STAY HOME!
