A total of 90 rape cases involving school students and 43 bullying cases were recorded in Kedah throughout 2025, raising serious concerns over the level of safety and well-being of students in the state.

Kedah Police Chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the statistics show that crimes involving students cannot be taken lightly and require concerted action from all parties, including schools, parents, and the wider community.

According to him, of the 90 rape cases recorded last year, 78 involved secondary school students, while 12 involved primary school pupils.

“Investigations carried out by the D11 Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Kedah Contingent Police Headquarters found that most rape cases involving school students were closely linked to social problems and moral decay.

“These include unrestricted social mixing without supervision, abuse of trust, and negligence in observing boundaries in relationships,” he said.

Meanwhile, Adzli also revealed that 43 bullying cases were recorded in Kedah throughout 2025, a sharp increase compared with 10 cases in 2024, representing a 330 per cent rise.

He said that of the total, 32 cases occurred in secondary schools, nine in primary schools, and two involved private schools.

“Of all the bullying cases, 31 perpetrators were arrested, and 11 of them were charged in court. These statistics prove that bullying is not a minor issue and will be met with firm legal action without compromise,” he stressed.

Self-safety awareness and sexual education important

He emphasised that there is no legal protection for any criminal behaviour, even if the perpetrator is underage or a school student.

In discussing prevention, he stressed the importance of self-safety awareness and sexual education among students to prevent them from becoming crime victims.

According to him, no one has the right to touch, coerce, or exploit another person, whether physically, emotionally, or through social media.

“If there is any form of harassment or suspicious behaviour, students must immediately report it to teachers, parents, or the authorities,” he added.
