Trigger warning: This article mentions suicide.

The Singaporean man & woman who were found dead in a Cheras homestay died by suicide, PDRM confirmed.

The police also said that the pair were married to each other, and they were found in a room where all ventilation openings on the doors and windows were sealed with tape and garbage bags. Burnt charcoal residue was also found.

“They used a grill, sealed the room, and we have also informed the family about the matter,” Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said.

However, police said the couple did not leave a will.

In another report by China Press, the Serdang Police Chief said that the deceased man, Xie Jin De (transliteration), was wanted by PDRM for allegedly sexually assaulting an underage girl. He was supposed to be present at the Court on May 14th to face the charge of sexually assaulting an underage girl, but eventually did not appear.

The police also tried to contact Xie, but to no avail.

He was also previously charged with overstaying in Malaysia, and PDRM confirmed that the deceased woman, Zhuang Shu Yi (transliteration), had no previous criminal records.

On the other hand, the Cheras Police Chief, Adil Bolhassan, also did not rule out the possibility of the suicide’s motive, due to the male suspect’s refusal to go to jail for his crimes in Malaysia. However, the motive behind the suicide is still under investigation.

Aidil pointed out that the main task of the authorities at present is to clarify the cause of death of the two deceased. Other crimes involved before Xie’s death need to be further investigated with the Selangor police.

Xie was previously involved in cases in Selangor, including Section 14 (a) of the Child Sexual Offences Act 2017 for sexually assaulting an underage. If convicted, he may be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison and caning.

Xie and Zhuang’s bodies were discovered on Friday evening (May 16) in Taman Taynton View, Cheras. The corpses were discovered by the homestay’s housekeeper around 12:53 PM, who noticed a foul smell coming from the bedroom.
