For many people, working in an office is ideal as it doesn’t require much physical energy while others would prefer to be out and about. Just recently a Singaporean accountant has shared her story on how she switched her career path from being a full-time accountant to a hawker seller.
According to Sin Chew Daily, the Singaporean woman graduated from her studies in accounting and has since been working as an accountant. After working for close to 7 years, she realised that while she enjoys the stability the job offers, it’s been giving her a lot of mental pressure.
Following that, she decided to quit her job to start a little stall that sells apam balik. She revealed that she entered the Hawkers’ Development Programme set up by their government and from there, she learned how to make apam balik.
“When I first started out, my body couldn’t take the heat that was radiating off from the stove and I nearly fainted twice. That’s when i knew that being a hawker seller isn’t as easy as what other people would think.
I was sweating from head to toe and rarely could use the washroom!”, she said.
She also shared that as compared to her office job, she appreciates the fact that her mind can be empty after she ends work, and she can fully rest until the next day.
“When I was working in a firm, during peak seasons we would have to do OT all the time and I would often even dream about work when I sleep. It was getting to a point where even after work hours, my mind was still filled with work related thoughts”, she added.
She then ended the post saying that after a year plus of working on her little stall, she has managed to retain some customers and decided to set a day off on Saturdays so that she could spend time with her family.
“There are days where I want to give up but when returning customers come and tell me how much they enjoy my food, it just gives me the satisfaction that I couldn’t get when working in a firm”, she shared.
It’s definitely courageous to step out of your comfort zone and venture into a new path. Do you think you could’ve done it? Let us know in the comments below.
