Unfortunately, there are many Malaysian workers in Singapore who are stranded at public transportation stations there due to the Covid-19 travel restrictions the Malaysian government instilled.

Many of them were photographed sleeping on the floor of these station with all minimal belongings.

Thankfully, Singapore has offered a helping hand to these Malaysian workers, opening up a sporting hall as a shelter for Malaysian workers who are stranded with no place to go. They are also providing basic necessities such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, towels and so forth, as showcased by Grace Fu, a member of the Singaporean parliament.

She wrote, “Malaysians sleeping rough in Singapore? This team from MSF, on 12-hour shifts, kept them sheltered in Jurong East Sports Hall. The Malaysian workers were stranded without proper accommodation. At the sports hall, they were registered and given a ready pack which included – toiletries, towels, toilet paper (yes, one roll each) and a sleeping bag. They could shower and wash up before leaving for work in the morning. Contact MOM if you know of any Malaysians in need of temporary accommodation.

This team of public officers are from MSF. How long did it take them to activate and implement the plan to house Malaysians? Less than 2 days. On behalf of SportSG, I ask the members of the public whose bookings were cancelled with short notice for your understanding and forbearance. Our staff at Jurong East acted quickly to turnover the sports hall to accommodate the workers.”

We’re thankful that our stranded fellow Malaysians are being cared for during such a terrible time. This is such an example of how we should help one another when times get tough, instead of selfishly panic buying groceries and violating movement restrictions.
