As screenshot of two Facebook postings from Malaysians claiming that an SPM oral examination allegedly asked a question regarding the student’s dream wedding has recently gone viral on social media with many criticising the Education Ministry for such a ridiculous examination question should the allegations be true.
As reported by Malay Mail, the screenshot has been widely shared across social media and the publication also managed to acquire the screenshot through WhatsApp below:
The screenshot shows two separate postings on Facebook with the first individual claiming that her child was asked the question ‘What is your dream wedding theme?’ during her child’s SPM oral examination question. Meanwhile, the second posting said that one of the SPM oral question was ‘What was your dream wedding’.
Following the screenshot going viral, the matter reached the attention of former Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching who subsequently sought the Education Ministry’s confirmation whether the allegations were true.
In a statement today, Teo Nie Ching, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kulai said that such a question is inappropriate and should not be given to Form 5 students who are only 17 years old. She further asserted,
“I urge the Education Ministry to confirm if this question was really asked in the SPM oral question, and if true, apologise to all Form 5 students who had to answer such a question as well as to their parents,”
The alleged SPM oral examination question also received criticism from Parent Action Group for Education president Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim who share with The New Straits Times how the question was unsuitable, especially considering how child marriages are still a prevalent problem in Malaysia and it is seen as encouraging students to get married as soon as leaving school.
