Oh no, this is terrible! We should always respect and care for our parents but for this 37-year-old man, he had beaten up his mother and father so badly that they were bleeding and suffering from broken bones.
According to Straits Times, the man, who was identified as Foo Shun Xiang had been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and had flown into a rage just because he saw his elderly father wiping his mouth and nose with the same piece of tissue. This incident took place in their home at Chai Chee Drive flat in Singapore around 11pm on January 28 this year.
At that time, Foo had instructed his father, Foo Sah Leong, 68, to gargle his mouth in the master bedroom’s bathroom. When the older Foo had done so, he took a piece of tissue paper to wipe his mouth and accidentally wiped his nose as well.
Seeing this, Foo went berserk and started shouting at his father, saying that he had instructed them many times not to use the same tissue for their mouths and noses. His father retreated into the kitchen, where his mother, Chow Ah Lee, 65, tried to stop their son.
However, Foo started punching and kicking his father with a 1.2m-long aluminium pole even after the father was lying on the ground bleeding. He turned on his mother next and used the same pole to hit her until the stick broke and she was also injured and bleeding.
Foo threw the stick down the rubbish chute and asked his parents to shower and wash off the blood while he walked off as if nothing had happened. The next day after the assault, his mother complained that her ribs were in pain so Foo asked them to go to the hospital but told them to say that they were attacked by some dark-skinned robbers instead. Hey, that’s a racist lie!
The truth came out when the nurse who attended to the elderly couple at Singapore General Hospital lodged a police report on January 31. When the police asked her again on February 2, she changed her statement and told them that she had lied to protect her son.
Foo, who is jobless, was arrested and charged in court on October 16 with two counts of assault and causing grievous hurt to his parents. He pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous hurt to his mother while the second charge will be taken into consideration when he will be sentenced on October 23.
His mother suffered from three fractured ribs, a broken toe as well as bruises on the head, eyes and chest. Meanwhile, his father had to get stitches on his left ear and also had bruises and cuts all over his body. Foo had actually been diagnosed with OCD in 2009 and part of this disorder was that he fears dirt and contamination.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Esther Wong said that despite knowing this, the accused refused to take his prescribed medication. “The accused has a history of being controlling towards his parents. He would monitor their movements and would instruct them to adhere to certain cleanliness ‘rules’ and to perform cleaning rituals to his satisfaction. He would scold and hit them if they disobey his instructions. He explained that he does so to discipline them and to ensure they follow his prescribed ways of doing things,” she added.
This is also not the first time that he had attacked his parents because from 2009 to 2018, he had reportedly assaulted them at least four times. His mother said, “We are afraid of him but he is our only child. Sometimes he loses his temper and can’t control his emotions but since he is my son, we endure it for his sake.”
She added that she wants to send him for counselling too.
Hopefully, the son will receive the necessary help he needs to ensure that his disorder is treated!
