Taylor Swift is arguably one of the most recognisable artists of our generation and it’s no wonder that tickets to her concerts sell out as soon as the ticketing windows are open.
As we all know, she is currently on The Eras Tour now and during her Seattle shows, it was recorded that the crowd actually generated 2.3 magnitude seismic activity which is equivalent to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake, according to seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach.
Jackie Caplan-Auerbach, is a geology professor at Western Washington University and she saw a comparison of seismic activity during a 2011 Seattle football game “Beast Quake” and the 2023 Taylor Swift concerts in a Facebook group she moderates, reports CNN.
It is said that the Beast quake generated a 2.0 magnitude seismic activity which is only 0.3 less than the Taylor Swift quake.
“The shaking was twice as strong as ‘Beast Quake’. It absolutely doubled it.”
Jackie also said that a contributing factor to this is that cheers during a football game will die down but for concerts, it’s more random.
“For Taylor Swift, I collected about 10 hours of data where rhythm controlled the behaviour. The music, the speakers, the beat. All that energy can drive into the ground and shake it.”
Taylor Swift herself had commented on Instagram about how she loved the energy of the crowd in Seattle, “Seattle that was genuinely one of my favourite weekends ever. Thank you for everything. All the cheering, screaming, jumping, dancing, singing at the top of your lungs.”
We never knew that this could be possible so we learnt something new today!
