Just recently, a Singapore based oyster bar near Outram Road was put under the spotlight for imposing a $10 (RM32) surcharge for “noisy” and “disruptive” children.

According to CNA, the restaurant has voiced out saying that this “rule” was implemented a little over a month ago, however they have yet to charge any customers for it.

The reason that they would implement such a rule is because they’d want to, “Uphold the ambience and dining experience for their guests.”

This incident has since sparked controversy because a screenshot of a WhatsApp message was sent to Mothership SG.

In the screenshot, the restaurant stated that:

  • There will be no baby chair provided as it’s not a kid-friendly restaurant,
  • A SG$10 (RM32.15) surcharge will be imposed for “screaming” and “uncontrolled” kids that disrupts the ambience of the restaurant.

Prior to imposing such a policy, the restaurant expressed that they’ve been receiving complaints every week from other customers but ever since the new policy has been implemented, the complaints have been getting lesser and the children that are brought along seemed to be behaving well.

“99% of our customers are very respectful towards this new policy.”

“When a customer makes a reservation with us, we will be transparent and upfront that we have a policy that a surcharge of $10SGD (RM32.15) will be imposed for ‘screaming’ and ‘uncontrolled’ children,” they added.

According to their Google & Facebook review, it seems like their reviews have been fairly decent and as of now, there’s has only been 1 negative review on Trip Advisor regarding the implementation of their new surcharge policy.

The restaurant then emphasised that creating a comfortable dining experience has always been their ‘top priority’ and that they’re constantly looking for ways to improve their overall ambience.

What do you think of this policy? Do you think that it’s fair?
