Scammers are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to get someone else’s money. From pretending to be the father of the victim, to imitating UMNO president Dato Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Recently, a TikTok video posted by a Singaporean went viral as it featured a scammer who pretended to be a police officer in an attempt to get a man’s ID number.
The scammer had put up a fake background to resemble the authorities during his call and claimed to be from the “verification department” of the Singapore Police Force (SPF).
He then demanded for the victim to show his NRIC for “verification purposes”.
However, he found himself in shock and immediately switched off his camera and audio when his target appeared on camera wearing an SPF uniform.
The man asks, “You see what I’m wearing right now?”
“Oh motherf*cker, what are you talking about,” said the scammer.
When the man repeated his question, he was met with white noise from the scammer.
After prodding the scammer again and challenging him to turn on his video camera, the scammer finally said, “Love you, sir” and ends the call.
In a follow-up video, the man who was targeted clarified that he did not mean to impersonate a police officer, but only wanted to raise awareness on such scams.
He explained that that he served his National Service (NS) with the police, which is why he has the uniform.
