Earlier last month, 19-year-old Sabahan silat athlete, Merrywati Manuil, made Malaysians proud by winning gold at the 2022 World Silat Championships at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh.
Following that, the Christian girl went on to explain why she wears a tudung along with her Silat attire during competitions despite the headscarf not being mandatory.
Merrywati took to her Facebook page to share the explanation.
She wrote, “Many people are wondering why I wear a hijab even though I am a Christian. Silat is the heritage of the Malay people. As a non-Malay, I respect, admire and love Silat. Although it is not mandatory to wear a hijab, I prefer to wear a hijab during competitions.”
“The tudung is not only compulsory for Malay women to maintain their modesty but also for me to look more polite, tidy and civilised during the competition. Absolutely NO coercion from any side.”
Additionally, she said that, considering she is learning of Malay heritage, she should also immerse herself in their teachings.
“I’m studying the knowledge of the Malay people, of course I will follow and act according to what I learn. Hopefully, the question related to wearing this hijab is now answered.”
“Ah, don’t be too serious, kita kita juga baini. If the Malay people have MAT KILAU, I as a Murat have Aki ANTANOM,” she added.
What do you think of her decision?
