With the MyJPJ application, you can rat on those who misuse the emergency lane, which could land them in court. Just recently, two riders on the highway took it upon themselves to stop other drivers from misusing the emergency lane.
In a video by Tok Abah on the Facebook group Dashcam Malaysia, a couple of motorcyclists were spotted riding at slow speeds on the emergency lane while chatting with each other in an attempt to slow down other drivers who were using the emergency lane, allegedly to skip traffic.
The drivers behind the riders had no choice but to slow down on the emergency lane as well.
The incident happened on Sunday (May 4) on the Sedenak Highway near Kulai, Johor. At that time, all drivers on the highway were stuck in heavy traffic, causing some drivers to cut the queue by using the emergency lane before the riders stepped in to block others from misusing the emergency lane.
Social media users react to the video
“Who came up with the idea of implementing smart lanes? It’s troublesome.”
“I’m just waiting for the dashcam from the driver behind the riders. What would he have to say?”
“Give them medals!”
“Good. Since the implementation of smart lanes, some people assume all emergency lanes are smart lanes.”
“Nice work. Sometimes, it’s annoying to see drivers assuming the left lane is a smart lane when the smart lane has ended.”
While some netizens thanked and praised the riders, others were not as impressed
“What if the woman inside the car was rushing to give birth? Please make way for those who need to use the emergency lane.”
“The emergency lanes are not for drivers or riders to use as they please. If it were a smart lane, there would have been a signboard.”
“Emergency lane is not for the riders either.”
“The riders have no right to stop the drivers who pay for the tolls. That is their ‘sin’ with JPJ and the traffic police. Don’t meddle.”
In case you are not aware, the Smart Lane was introduced on the North Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) back in 2019 to help ease traffic congestion along the Setia Alam route to the Shah Alam Toll exit during peak hours.
Simply put, all lanes, including the emergency lane, can be used. By allowing this, it is said that traffic congestion is eased by as much as 40%. You can watch the video by PLUS Malaysia Berhad here on how to use the smart lanes correctly.
