PAS clarified that they do not support the social media post made by one of their leaders questioning the appointment of Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng as a Lieutenant General, saying that “racism or racial prejudice in any form has no place in PAS”.

Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng recently made history by becoming the first Malaysian Chinese senior officer to be promoted to Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

In response, PAS politician and preacher Zaharudin Muhammad sparked controversy on social media when he stated that, within the next 30 to 40 years, a Chinese individual could become the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

PAS later issued a statement distancing itself from the controversial social media post made by one of its leaders, clarifying that the party does not endorse the remarks.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan reaffirmed that “racism or racial prejudice in any form has no place in PAS,” stating that such views are completely at odds with the nation’s core cultural values and aspirations.

“It must be clearly stated that the post (and any other similar statements) represent solely the personal views of the individual and are not only unrelated to, but completely contrary to, PAS’s official policies, decisions, and vision as outlined in the PAS Constitution, resolutions from the Annual General Assembly (Muktamar), party meetings, and official statements issued from time to time,” he said.

“It’s a milestone that should be celebrated by all M’sians”

Takiyuddin emphasised that diversity and differences in background should never be used as a reason to treat any member of society unfairly, nor as an excuse to block anyone’s progress, opportunities, achievements, talents, or legitimate aspirations.

“PAS is committed to and upholds the principles and reality of Malaysia’s multiracial and multi-faith society, which is a unique and valuable feature of our nation that must be nurtured with care. This commitment has been part of PAS’s history from the beginning and is reflected in the many tireless initiatives and activities carried out by the party.”

He also acknowledged that the appointment of Dato’ Johnny Lim Eng Seng as a Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) is a historic milestone that should be celebrated by all Malaysians, not questioned or diminished because of his ethnic background.

“With regard to the attitudes and actions of any PAS leader who makes statements that conflict with the party’s official stance, policies, and interests, PAS consistently reminds its members to act with care and caution. The ability, achievement, progress, and success of any Malaysian in any field is something to be celebrated by all. PAS congratulates Lieutenant General Dato’ Johnny Lim on his achievement.”

With that said, Takiyuddin stressed that PAS will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any member who breaches party discipline, including those who display insensitive behaviour that undermines national unity or fuels discord and suspicion within society.
