The Public Health Malaysia Facebook page is claiming that ROSÉ and Bruno Mars’ new song, APT. (which refers to a Korean drinking game), encourages bad Western behaviour among the people.
They wrote, ” Have you heard the song with the catchy lyrics? Apatue, apatue. Apatue, apatue. Apatue, apatue?”
“Dissecting the lyrics of popular songs like ‘ROSÉ and Bruno Mars – APT.’ is very important, especially when the song is getting popular and is often used as background music on social media.”
In their post, Public Health Malaysia highlighted some of the lyrics from the song, including:
- Kissy face, kissy face, sent to your phone but I’m tryna kiss your lips for real.
- Turn this apatue into a club, I’m talkin’ drink, dance, smoke, freak, party all night.
They then brought up how ‘APT.’ (Apatue which translates to ‘apartment’) is being used seductively.
“The use of the term ‘APT.’ or ‘apartment’ as a symbolic meeting place in a seductive context also shows the normalisation of behaviour that is contrary to Eastern cultural values. What is more worrying is how this song is often used as background music in social media videos, making it a part of everyday life without us even realising it,”
“Children may memorise these lyrics without realising the message being conveyed. As parents, educators and as a society, we should be more careful and sensitive to the influence of Western culture that is increasingly being accepted without censorship,” they added.
Public Health Malaysia then told the general public that the people can judge for themselves by dissecting the lyrics of the song.
Netizens gave their two cents
While some agreed and stated that songs these days are becoming more and more inappropriate, others pointed out that it’s fine to listen as long as people do not follow suit and participate in Western culture.
“You can listen but just don’t follow. When are you going to progress, admin?”
“People just wanting to enjoy the melody is a problem? You can go and live in a cave.”
“It’s just a song. Don’t be so serious lah, you’ll age faster.”
“I’m not a fan but if people take the context of this song seriously, they should admit themselves into a mental hospital.”
