Babies are cute and adorable creatures but since they are so young, their immune systems are still fragile. This makes them more prone to getting diseases so, guardians, it’s important to keep them away from any illnesses.

According to doctors, there’s a virus on the rise that’s especially dangerous for infants. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus that’s quite harmful and may often go undetected as it can be mistaken for a common cold. This virus is also known to be the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children younger than one year of age.

“Anyone can get RSV but it’s especially serious for infants under six months old who are most vulnerable to the virus and can even lead to hospitalisation.”

In case you’re wondering, the symptoms for RSV are as follow:

  • runny nose
  • wet cough
  • fever
  • irritability

The main difference between RSV and common cold is that there’s more of inflammation and secretion in the airway. Also, RSV can last around three weeks longer than a cold. So, if you find your infant is suffering from a cold for more than three weeks, you better get them to a doctor quick.

Although there’s no treatment for the virus, the best way is to just practice symptomatic care which includes giving your baby fluids, using the humidifier and giving them saline washes. Always practice good hygiene and make sure to wash your hands.

But the doctor also says that it’s important not to let people simply handle your kids, especially if they are not feeling well. Physical contact with ill individuals can infect your kids with the virus and in more severe cases, the disease can be fatal as the lungs fail.

It’s the flu season and I’m sure parents would only want the best for their kids and if you find your kid ill, make sure to take necessary precautions and keep your kids away from people who look unwell!
