The COVID-19 pandemic in the past has made money transactions go digital, with payments being done online or via QR code. However, some places are still lacking in convenience, where only cash is accepted.

Kepong MP, Lim Lip Eng recently shared on his X account and expressed his desire to see improvement in train stations in terms of payment. Lim was at one of the Monorail stations and he was surprised to find out that the ticketing machines did not accept any form of digital payment, except for cash.

“They only accept cash with exact amount. When I approached the worker at the counter, I was told that tokens can only be bought at the ticketing machines.”

Lim is aware that the hassle in the payment system is not something new, and he expressed his concern about tourists who are using the facility.

“When are you updgrading this? Public transportation should be convenient, not with complicated matters like this. Even the pisang goreng aunties are accepting QR code for payments today.”

Just this evening (November 30), RapidKL got their attention on the viral tweet, and they have since responded to Lim’s concern about the payment system.

“As of now, we only accept cash for the purchase of tokens. However, QR payment is accepted at the counter if you wish to reload your Touch N’ Go balance.”

To those who are also wondering about an open payment system at train stations, RapidKL revealed that there have been ongoing talks about it. However, we might need to wait a little longer before it happens.

“We expect to launch the open payment system in 2025, which will ease many users.”

As of now, it’s better to make sure your Touch N’ Go has sufficient balance at all times, or to buy the tokens with cash as an alternative.
