In an Asian household, it’s almost impossible for us to experience childhood without nagging, scolding, and punishments from our dear parents. Tough times were what made us wiser & stronger today.
However, times and things are different now.
Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor recently quoted that some parents nowadays are incredibly pampering their children to the extent of interfering in matters of discipline at school.
“You can’t punish and scold them. We have to spare the rod.”
In response to these ‘untouchable’ pampered children, Sanusi has his very own description.
“It’s like rearing chickens in the school.”
According to a report by Utusan, the atmosphere in learning institutions nowadays has become more challenging than ever. It is made worse with the increase in discipline-related matters among the students. Everyone, including the Ministry of Education, must handle the issues holistically.
Culturally unsuitable
Sanusi then spoke about the education system in Finland, and the United States of America, which he believed is unfit for our culture.
“I think the education model devised at the international level is unsuitable for us as we’re culturally different.”
The education system in Western countries rarely implements punishment for their students, and Sanusi believed that it is not yet time for our country to follow their steps.
“I think if our education system in Malaysia is like that, it means we’re endangering ourselves.”
He noted that to educate children, there has to be reasonable disciplinary action so that students understand. The school is also where well-educated and trained students are created.
He added that education is an effort to prepare the younger generation for knowledge-related teachings and the good norms of life.
Do you miss the times when we were punishments were a ‘trend’ in school back then? Fellow high school students, yay or nay when it comes to punishment?
As for the parents, what do you think of the current situation when it comes to rearing one’s child with discipline?
