As Malaysians, the mastery of the national language – Bahasa Melayu is undoubtedly important, but English proficiency should not be abandoned under any circumstances. Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim aims to improve Malaysian students’ English proficiency in 2024.

In other words, Anwar is giving emphasis on dual language without compromising the mastery of BM, reported BERNAMA.

“The Malay language must be mastered by all students without compromise, but we have to think of new methods to improve English proficiency.”

By next year, Anwar is expecting to see an improvement in the quality of English language proficiency without putting the position of the Malay language at risk.

“If this country wants to further its economic capacity and progress, Malay must be the main language, knowledge language and must be mastered well by all Malaysians including in private and international schools.”

All our children, especially in the national schools, must have additional emphasis so that their command of the English language is much better than it is now, Anwar added.

At a thanksgiving ceremony in conjunction with the one-year administration of the MADANI Govt, he said efforts to master English need to be implemented quickly as the developed countries give emphasis on dual language.

What do you think the government can do in order to focus on dual language without compromising our national language?
