A few days back, Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim hinted at a meeting with Elon Musk, and the meeting happened yesterday (14 July) online.
In his Instagram post, Anwar revealed that Tesla will be setting up its HQ in Selangor by the end of 2023. Elon said that he decided to invest in Malaysia and Anwar made it clear that the government support the opening of Tesla’s head office in Selangor. At the time of writing, no official date has been disclosed yet.
During the meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Space X, which was also attended by International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, they spoke about the commitment to achieve zero net emissions, and PM is certain that our country can reach there in less than 30 years.
“Malaysia will continue to strengthen its commitment in the subject of net zero carbon emissions or ‘net-zero emissions’ as early as 2050.”
According to PM, Malaysia has a plan and a comprehensive ecosystem, as well as competitive resources in supporting the clean energy industry including electric mobility. In the meantime, he added that discussion about the participation of SpaceX in providing the Starlink satellite service to Malaysia was also involved.
“This can contribute to faster and wider internet access especially in rural areas.”
The online meeting that lasted 25 minutes was also attended by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, and SpaceX senior director Lauren Dreyer.
With Elon Musk now in the picture, we certainly can’t wait to see the development that Malaysians are bound to see.
