Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor recently shared the inspiring story of his fourth child, Nur Hana, who overcame significant health challenges to achieve outstanding results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 examinations.

Nur Hana scored 10As and 1B+, a remarkable accomplishment that reflects not only academic excellence but also immense resilience and determination. Her success was highlighted by the Menteri Besar’s media officer, Helmi Khalid, who posted the achievement on Facebook.

He noted that Sanusi was present at Maktab Mahmud Padang Terap to support his daughter as she collected her results.

A lighthearted celebration

During the event, the Menteri Besar shared a playful moment with the crowd, joking that Hana’s A+ in English was a trait inherited directly from him.

“Her command of English is as good as mine!” Sanusi quipped.

However, behind this cheerful celebration lies a deeply moving journey of perseverance.

Battling congenital health issues

Hana’s success is particularly poignant given her medical history. From the age of four months, she was diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). These congenital heart conditions severely restricted her physical activity, preventing her from enjoying a typical childhood or playing freely with her peers.

These health setbacks often caused her to fall behind in her early education. Sanusi recalled the heartbreak of an unsuccessful medical procedure when Hana was just eight years old. As a father, he described the deep disappointment of that period, though he remained steadfast in his faith and hope for her recovery.

The turning point

The definitive shift in Hana’s life came in April 2021. At the age of 12, she made the courageous decision to undergo open-heart surgery at Hospital Pulau Pinang.

The procedure, performed by a team of specialist cardiologists, was a success and provided her with a new lease on life and the physical strength to pursue her studies with renewed vigour.

A message of hope

Today, Hana’s academic results serve as a powerful testament to her strength. Her journey from the operating theatre to the top of her class has become a source of inspiration for many.

Reflecting on his daughter’s triumph, Sanusi noted in a Facebook post:

“This success has proven that patience and prayers will ultimately find their way.”
