The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) has confirmed that viral postings on social media of a herd of elephants climbing a hill did in fact take place in Malaysia, specifically at an area nearby Tasik Kenyir in Hulu Terengganu, Terengganu. However, the department denies speculations from the public that the incident is a sign of an impending natural disaster, saying that the hill and its surrounding area are actually the natural habitats and paths of the elephants.
As reported by Berita Harian, PERHILITAN director Loo Kean Seong said that the hill on which the herd of elephants were walking on is their natural path as they live in the nearby forest area. Loo further elaborated that the department is aware of the presence of elephants in the area and has continuously conducted surveys within the vicinity to avoid any unwanted incidents.
The PERHILITAN director also advised the public to not approach or bother the elephants should they come across the majestic animals to avoid disturbing them and causing unwanted incidents. Loo further urged passersby in the area to not go out of their vehicles to record videos or take photos of the elephants. Moreover, the public is also advised to not use their camera’s flash when taking photos or videos from inside their vehicles so as to not disturb the elephants.
Road users near the area are also told to not use their car honk if they come across the elephants so as to not make the animals turn agressive. In fact, PERHILITAN said that the best cause of action when you spot elephants in the area is to immediately drive away.
