Surgical masks are one of the must-have items this season, as people rush to get their hands on them in a bid to keep the novel coronavirus at bay. Pharmacies, stores and even online shops are selling these masks like hotcakes in countries all over the world.

However, it looks like people are not disposing of these used masks properly and simply littering them around – which is a huge no-no. Plus, we’re wearing these masks to prevent from getting any infectious diseases but dumping them indiscriminately will enable these viruses to be spread even faster.

This has been seen in places such as Singapore and in Johor Bahru, especially near the Sultan Iskandar Building Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex. A Singaporean netizen shared that she saw several masks littered by the roadside while she was taking a five-minute walk.

She said, “Dear Singapore – please STOP discarding your used masks on the ground. If you are concerned enough about the spread of the coronavirus that you are wearing a mask, it makes no sense to litter like this. You are only increasing the chances of this thing getting out of control and increasing the risk to your own health. We can do better than this. We are better than this.”

She told WORLD OF BUZZ that she lives in the Tan Tock Seng hospital area and the photos were taken a few days ago. Now, when she walks around the area, she has noticed that the number of discarded masks has increased a lot compared to the past week. “I noticed that the number has really increased in the last week – from two or three to about a dozen,” she added.

Another report by China Press stated that netizens found many surgical masks being haphazardly discarded around the building and parking lot which is honestly disgusting, to say the least. These masks should be disposed of properly to prevent any viruses from spreading. Netizens also criticised the people who littered their masks like these and said they were irresponsible and not civic-minded.

Please dispose of your masks properly after using them!
