A couple of days ago, a plain clothes police officer by the title of sergeant major at the Sri Gading police station in Johor was caught on camera pulling the hair of and repeatedly slapping a crying man for allegedly not fasting and stealing.

Many called out the law enforcement officer for brutality and going way too far with his actions.

Following the backlash by Malaysians over the incident, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) decided to investigate the matter and their temporary outcome has since left people outraged.

Based on a report by Harian Metro, Johor Police Chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat shared that the officer has been transferred to another unit at the Batu Pahat District Police Headquarters temporarily while pending the investigation, to a position that has no interactions with the general public.

This led many to believe that the officer is being let off easy for his brutal actions, especially considering regular folks would get remanded should they commit similar actions.

The StratCommProBono Twitter page shared their opinion on this.

“For members of the public who are working in private companies, misbehavior like this would have caused a firing within 24 hours,” they shared.

And netizens echoed this belief.

“Members of the public get remanded. Police officers just get transferred.”

“Isn’t he supposed to be suspended until the end of the investigation?”

Transfer 2

“I don’t understand why the the government’s policies are so forgiving. Police officers need to have a high sense of integrity, they have to be firm and fire those who are being problematic.”

Transfer 3

“Horrible solution. His behaviour will remain the same, he’s just be somewhere else. Just give him a ‘dishonorable discharge’. It’ll be a great slap to his face.”

And true enough, police officers are supposed to be held at a higher standard and are supposed to be examples of good behaviour to the general public.
