In a statement, Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Chief Superintendent Jay January Siowou said that the police have taken notice of the viral video, which shows a grey Proton X50 being driven on the motorcycle lane of the second Penang bridge.

An initial investigation found that the incident took place at around 1.30 pm yesterday (21 June) on the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge heading towards Batu Maung from Batu Kawan.

Accordingly, an investigation paper was opened under Rule 8(3) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN166/59) for the offence of using a non-designated lane.

Moreover, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Headquarters (IPD) managed to track the driver of the SUV, a 70-year-old Malaysian woman and brought her to the Seberang Perai Selatan District IPD for further action.

Jay January Siowou thus urged the public to adhere to laws on the road and not to take lightly all the rules that are in place, especially at high-risk lanes such as a bridge or a motorcycle lane.

He stressed,

“Stern action will be taken against any parties who are found to have committed a traffic offence that endangers other road users.”
