A nurse had the shock of her life when she discovered a rat that had been fried in a tray of fried chicken at a mixed rice vendor at the Jalan Utama Street Food in Penang, where she was packing food.

According to a report by China Press, it is understood that the vendor did not notice the rat that had fallen into the wok while chicken was being fried, and had accidentally served the fried rat along with the chicken.

Upon discovering the fried rat, the nurse, who works at the Penang General Hospital located behind the hawker centre, immediately reported the matter to the Penang Health Department and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), which led to a crackdown operation by the authorities.

Not just the mixed rice vendor

During the crackdown operation, the authorities ended up ordering a total of 12 food stalls, including the vendor that served the fried rat, to immediately close for 14 days due to hygiene issues.

The authorities apparently found rat droppings and cockroaches in and around the food stalls.

A ‘canteen’ for medical staff

Due to the hawker centre’s proximity to the Penang General Hospital, the hospital staff often treated the hawker centre as their go-to ‘canteen’.

However, following this incident, the hospital staff are now thinking twice before opting to buy their food at the hawker centre.
