But Chinese New Year aside, did you know consuming pineapples has plenty of health benefits? Here are seven benefits you should know:

1. Pineapples are jam-packed with VITAMIN C!

Pineapple 1

According to U.S Department of Agriculture, one cup of pineapple contains 78.9 milligrams of Vitamin C. This vitamin is important as it helps to encourage growth and healing in the body. Everyday Health states that Vitamin C plays a role in everything from repairing your wounds to iron absorption!

2. Pineapples can help improve your digestive system

Pineapple 2

MedicalNewsToday says that pineapples contain fibre and water content which can help prevent constipation and promotes a healthy digestive tract. They are also rich in bromelain, a type of enzyme that helps the body to digest proteins. Bromelain also aids in reducing inflammatory immune cells that damage digestive tract linings.

3. Pineapples help in reducing risks of getting cataracts

Being jam-packed with nutrients, consuming pineapples can help boost your immune system. In a study published in 2014 in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, researchers found out that children who had canned pineapples contracted fewer bodily infections as compared to children who did not consume it over the nine-week study period. Hence, researchers concluded that having a moderate serving of pineapples daily (140 to 280 grams) can help reduce the risk of getting sick.

6. Pineapples prevents hypertension

Hypertension, also known as High Blood Pressure (HBP), is when one experiences blood pressure that is higher than the average person. In an article by NDTV, it is said that pineapple juice contains high potassium content and low sodium which can help in maintaining normal blood pressure and make you feel relaxed.

7. Antioxidants in pineapples have cancer-fighting properties

Pineapple Bromelain

While it cannot fully prevent cancer, the antioxidants present in the spiky fruit can help fight off radical cells and reduce cancer risks. In an article by Healthline, pineapples contain Bromelain that aids in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which are both linked to cancer. Bromelain helps rid off some cancer cells and aid white blood cell functions.

While pineapples have great health benefits, consuming them too much would be harmful to your body as well. Livescience states that having too much pineapple may make your lips, tongue, and cheeks feel tender but it usually wears off in a few hours. Also, due to the high amount of Vitamin C in pineapples, consuming too much of the fruit may induce diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or heartburn. Hence, consume moderately!

So what you waiting for, enjoy your pineapple!
