It’s hard to deny how the digitalised environment has eased our lives in so many ways, including when making a payment. However, blunders are still expected at times, and recently, a customer in Singapore accidentally paid extra for a noodle.

Just recently, a noodle restaurant in Singapore, Xiao Mei Ban Mian has taken to their Instagram page to look for a customer who has paid an extra amount of SGD445.5 (approximately Rm1,430) for a meal that costs only SGD4.5 (approximately RM14.5). That’s a blunder that costed an extra RM1,415 for just a meal!

In case you’re wondering, the payment was made via NETS QR code, and the restaurant believes that the customer may have mistakenly typed in SGD450, instead of the correct pricing, SGD4.50. As they have no idea how to reach out to the customer, whose identity is unknown, Xiao Mei Ban Mian can only attempt to spread the mistake online, in hopes that it will reach the customer who has paid the wrong amount for his meal.

Instead of keeping the “extra income”, Xiao Mei Ban Mian opted to be honest and said they wish to return the extra amount to the customer.

“We would like to return the extra amount of SGD450-SGD4.50= SGD445.50 to that customer.”

Xiao Mei Ban Mian also stated that after checking the CCTV footage, they suspect the customer might be elderly who is possibly not a regular patron.

“We are worried that he might have no idea about this mistake. Please spread the news so that the customer is aware of it, and he/she can get the money back.”

The noodle restaurant also urged the public to be careful when making online payments to avoid paying the wrong amount.

“When you show the transaction screen to cashier, the words on the phone are so small that 450 and 4.50 may not be very obvious.”

The absence or the misplacement of the decimal point can make a huge difference. This shall also serve as a huge reminder to all of us to be extra alert when making online transactions.
