Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has sternly denounced the action of one of its staff who is believed to have insulted the King of Malaysia, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, in a viral social media post.

The viral screenshot circulating on social media

A screenshot of the post has been circulating on social media recently, showing the man allegedly criticising the appointment of Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and using vulgar words against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Furthermore, the social media user attached a graphic made by Sinar Harian on the appointment of the new IGP, which wrongly claimed that Mohd Khalid was a member of UMNO and PKR. Sinar Harian has since apologised for the error.

UiTM Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib, in a statement, as reported by Sinar Harian, stressed that the university will not compromise on any form of violation of the principle of respect, especially when it involves the Royal Institutions, religion, race and national leadership.

He further revealed that the staff is now being investigated by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and that UiTM will give full cooperation to ensure the investigation will be done transparently and according to the law. The university is also leaving it to PDRM to take the appropriate action.

Dr Shahrin Sahib asserted,

“UiTM will not compromise with any form of violations of ethics, discipline and law among campus members…”

“As a public institution of higher learning based on the values of integrity, professionalism and patriotism, UiTM stresses its commitment to defending the university’s dignity and will not compromise on any actions that besmirch the good name of the institution, the Royal Institutions or the country.”

The UiTM Vice Chancellor also reminded all of its university members to be responsible when using social media, to adhere to the laws of the country and to preserve societal harmony and the institution’s image.
