In Langkawi, the police detained a couple and their 17 friends for breaching the Movement Control Order (MCO) when they took turns taking pictures to commemorate the couple’s recent nuptials.
According to the Langkawi District Police Chief ACP Shariman Ashari, the group was spotted clad in matching clothes circa 6.30pm at a housing area in Ayer Hangat.
“During the patrol, police officers saw a group of individuals consisting of the newlyweds and 17 others taking pictures at a nearby river.”
Police proceeded to detain the individuals for organising activities in a large group and had no concrete reason to leave their homes.
Aged between 17 to 28-years-old, they were brought to the Kuah Police Station for documentation and was issued a compound of RM1,000 each before their release.
On the 28th of January 2021, Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Negeri Kedah (JHEAIK) announced that nuptials were only permitted at District Religious Offices.
A video of those involved has also made its way on social media.
We understand that there is a need to take a few pictures on your beautiful day, but doing it in large groups is not only dangerous for those involved but also others around you.
Let’s curb our urge to flout the SOPs shall we? Not all of us can afford to fork out RM1,000 to pay fines.
