As part of their world tour, the K-pop group Blackpink recently performed in Macau, China and soon after the show, the girl group expressed their gratitude through their official Weibo account, a Chinese social media platform.

Fans would usually respond with how much they enjoyed the show but in this case, the reply was quite different and in fact, the fans in Macau weren’t too pleased with Blackpink’s gratitude. And no, it had nothing to do with Blackpink’s performance in the country but it was merely a word that prompted the netizens to “school” Blackpink on their social media.

“Thank you, Macanese!”

In their Weibo post, Blackpink thanked the fans in Macau for attending their concert and the girl group addressed the fans as “Macanese BLINKS”, which did not sit well with the fans in the country.

To them, Blackpink should’ve simply addressed them as Chinese. Following the criticism, Blackpink has since edited the post and the initial term “Macanese” no longer exists.

“We were deeply touched by our Macau BLINKs this week,” Blackpink said in their latest (and corrected) post.

“If you can’t spell Chinese, we’ll teach you”

According to Countrymeters, Macau, the region under the Special Administrative of China is populated by 95% Chinese, and the netizens made sure that Blackpink is caught up with that.

“Stop trying to be funny. What’s Macanese? Is it so hard to type Chinese that you have to create a new term?”

“If you can’t spell Chinese, we’ll teach you.”

“Crazy. How could they call us Macanese?”

“Macau is not our ‘surname’. Don’t you know how to spell Chinese?”

Another netizen reminded Blackpink and told them the list of countries that belong to China, and asked them to “stop doing tricks.”

“If you’re in China, at least respect some facts about China!”

Months ago, Blackpink performed in Bukit Jalil, KL. Do you think it would’ve caused a different reaction if Blackpink addressed us as KL BLINKS and not Malaysians?
